This large pickup truck offers regular, extended, and crew cab body styles. It borrows its basic design from the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Extended cabs have rear-hinged back doors that don't open independently of the fronts. Regular cabs can seat up to three passengers, while extendeds and crews can seat up to six. Three bed lengths are available: the 5-foot-8-inch short bed; 6-foot-6-inch standard bed; and 8-foot long bed. The 2009 GMC Sierra offers two interiors, dubbed "pure pickup" and "luxury inspired."

Available engines, depending on cab/bed configuration, are a 195-hp 4.3-liter V6; 295-hp 4.8-liter V8; 315-hp 5.3-liter V8; 367-hp 6.0-liter V8; and 403-hp 6.2-liter V8. Certain versions of the 5.3-liter V8 and all 6.2 V8 engines can run on E85 ethanol-blended fuel. The 5.3 and 6.0 V8 engines come with GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. V6, 4.8 V8, and most 5.3 V8 versions have a 4-speed automatic transmission. Available on 5.3 V8 Crew Cab as well as the 6.0 V8 is a 6-speed automatic. Some rear-drive Sierras with the 5.3-liter V8 and 6-speed automatic can be equipped as the XFE, which stands for Xtra Fuel Economy. XFE has specific wheels and tires, along with other mechanical and aerodynamic treatments. GM claims an increase in fuel economy of up to 7 percent over non-XFE versions. Unique to the Sierra lineup is the Denali. It's a crew cab with the 6.2-liter V8 and specific interior and exterior trim. Maximum towing capacity is 10,700 lb.

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid has a 6.0-liter V8 engine that pairs with an electric motor for 332 hp total. It can run on one or both of its power sources, depending on driving demands, and requires no plug-in charging. The Hybrid uses a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The Hybrid's maximum towing capacity is 6100 lb.

Rear-wheel drive is standard across the board. Two 4-wheel-drive systems are offered: a part-time setup that should not be left engaged on dry pavement, and GM's Autotrac that can. Both include a low-range gear for off-roading. All-wheel drive is available on the Denali. Sierra is available with several different suspensions. The Z83 and Z85 setups are designed for ride comfort. The Z60 is a street performance suspension, and the Z71 is for off-road use. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and curtain side airbags. Available features include a navigation system, remote engine start, and a new-for-2009 wireless cell phone link.

The Canyon delivers good handling and a ruggedly attractive exterior, but places in the middle of its class because it can't match the power or interior accommodations of top competitors.

The 2008 GMC Canyon is an acceptable but not outstanding performer with rugged good looks, and falls mid-pack of the six ranked compact pickup trucks. On the whole, the automotive press likes the Canyon for work or play. New Car Test Drive says, "The Crew Cab can haul home a load of horse manure for the garden, then take the family out for dinner and a movie (after hosing out the bed, that is)."

But despite the overall praise, the Canyon is also seen as an underpowered truck with poor-quality interior materials that are not in line with its price. In fact, at higher trim levels, the Canyon costs about as much as larger GMC trucks. The Detroit News notes the base GMC Sierra and the Canyon are virtually the same price. "Against that backdrop, the two-wheel-drive Canyon Crew Cab SLE doesn't look like a great value." Adding to this sentiment, Car and Driver calls the sticker price "a shocker," saying, "I'd be more forgiving if there were some neat touches," but "I'd need something more than just increased agility to keep me out of a full-size truck." Adding to the disappointment is the fact that the Canyon's fuel economy is only average for the class.

The Canyon is available as a regular cab model, an extended cab, or as a crew cab. Regular and extended cab models are available with base, SL, and SLE trim packages, while crew cab models are available only with the SLE package. Fuel-stingy minicars are back in vogue, thanks to escalating gas prices. Ford has long promised such a car for its U.S. lineup. In fact, it had one ready several years back, but canceled it on learning the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris would show up.

Since then, the Blue Oval has been working on what it thinks will be a more competitive minicar. Though Ford isn’t talking timetable or specifications yet, the three Verve concepts, unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and 2008 Detroit Auto Show suggest the showroom version is well on the road to completion. So does the debut of a new Mazda 2, which will parent the U.S. baby as well as a redesign of Ford’s popular European Fiesta. Right now, sources predict the American version--which will be badged Fiesta--will arrive in 2010 as a 2011 model.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta is another “world car” project a la Ford’s 1981 Escort and 2000 Focus. Like the original VW Beetle, the idea is a basic design that can be built and sold profitably the world over, because one car serving many markets drastically cuts development costs and raises profit potential. That’s why General Motors still dabbles with world cars, too.

In the past, though, Detroit “world cars” ended up with so many regional design and engineering changes that economies of scale were diminished, if not erased. The Focus is one example. At first, the U.S. and European models were quite similar. Then Ford Europe did a 2005 redesign that U.S. marketers deemed too costly. In other words, a Euro-based Focus would have been priced out of its U.S. market slot. Which is why our Focus still uses the original design, already paid for, albeit heavily updated for 2008.

Ford says Focus will be a “world car” again in its next incarnation, expected around 2011. There’s not much choice. Ford is running very low on cash and must leverage its global resources--that timeworn Detroit cliché--to get the most new model bang for the bucks it has. That’s why Ford CEO Alan Mullaly is busy spearheading a global product plan that aims for big savings by greatly trimming the number of platforms and parts in Ford Motor’s worldwide inventory. The increased sharing won’t be confined to small cars, either. Ford also plans to merge two different midsize sedans, the American Fusion and European Mondeo, into a single basic design, with only modest tailoring for various markets.

All this explains why the 2011 Ford Fiesta will be closely related to the next-generation Fiesta, but possibly sourced from low-wage Brazil or Mexico to achieve a competitive El Norte price. And because Ford now assigns small-car development to Japanese affiliate Mazda, which is plenty experienced that way, the Fiesta will be derived from the recently-released second-generation Mazda 2. That model isn’t coming here, but its good U.K. and Continental notices bode well for the North American Ford.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta will share a new B2E corporate platform with the Mazda 2, but have different styling (penned by Ford designers in Europe) and perhaps different powertrains too. It will look more conservative than the Verve concept, which Ford says suggests the general “design language” of the production car. But the concept is certainly expressive, as is the wedgy Mazda 2, so the showroom Fiesta won’t be another plain two-box appliance like the Fiesta sold here way back in 1977-1980.

Size wise, the 2011 Ford Fiesta should be close to the Fit, Yaris, Chevrolet Aveo and other so-called “B-Class” minicars, but a generous wheelbase versus overall length should make for a surprisingly roomy four-seater, judging by the Mazda 2. It’s front-wheel drive, of course, and a 4-door sedan body style is assured for the U.S. Two- and 4-door hatchbacks are likely for Europe and possibly for our side of the pond as well.

Powertrains should come from the Mazda 2, which in various markets offers twincam 4-cylinder engines of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. We’d guess the U.S. 2011 Ford Fiesta will get the 1.5 at least, or perhaps a 1.8-liter enlargement providing the extra low-end torque that’s always so helpful for U.S. driving conditions. Transmissions should comprise a 5-speed manual and an optional 5-speed automatic, also per the 2. Standard equipment should include antilock brakes, front torso side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Traction control will certainly be available, maybe even standard. Stability control is a likely option, as it is on the Mazda.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Ford Fiesta

Depending on marketers’ courage, the 2011 Ford Fiesta may offer upscale extras like sport suspension, 16- or 17-inch tires to replace standard 15s, power windows, keyless power door locks, perhaps even a navigation system. The options list will almost certainly show the new Ford Sync system for voice-activated control of cell phones and portable music players, if only to court the youth market. An available 5-speed automatic would be a competitive advantage among B-Class cars, where 4-speed transmissions are the rule so far. Let’s also note that the latest Mazda 2 weighs some 220 pounds less than the previous version, which bodes well for both performance and fuel economy in the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Buying Advice for the 2011 Ford Fiesta

B-Class competition is heating up fast. Suzuki now offers sedan and hatchback versions of its little SX4; Toyota’s Scion brand has replaced its small xA hatchback with the more-refined xD; and 2009 brings a new, slightly larger Honda Fit with fresh styling, better performance and more interior space. The Toyota Yaris will also be tweaked before its expected redesign for model-year 2012. And Korean brands Hyundai and Kia won’t be idle. There’s also the prospect of a low-cost Chinese-sourced mini from newly independent Chrysler, though its timing is still a bit murky. With all this, the 2011 Ford Fiesta will have a lot to contend with, but it should be up to it, assuming the well-received Mazda 2 is any guide.

The 2007 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sees no major changes from last year. This four-passenger, 2-door coupe is Ferrari's flagship car. The 612 uses a 532-hp 5.75-liter V12 engine that teams with a 6-speed manual transmission. Optional is Ferrari's F1A sequential manual transmission (SMT) that uses a small console stick to engage reverse and drive. Shifting is done through steering wheel paddles, but the transmission can be set to shift like an automatic. Standard safety equipment includes: ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system. The antiskid system has driver-selectable settings to limit its intervention during high-performance driving. Neither front side airbags nor curtain side airbags are available. The F430 replaced the F360 in late 2005 and the current model is slated for an update in 2008. Changes for 2007 to Ferrari's two-seat exotic sports car are minimal. As before, the F430 is available in both coupe and Spyder body styles. All versions are powered by a 4.3-liter V-8 developing 383 horsepower. Standard versions come equipped with a six-speed manual transmission while F1 variants use a race-style "clutchless" manual transmission which uses computer controls to engage and disengage the clutch; the driver has full manual control of upshifts and downshifts, which are actuated by paddle shifters on the steering wheel. There is also an electronically controlled "E-diff" rear differential, which manages torque output under full throttle for enhanced control. Challenge models are track-oriented and come with carbon-ceramic brakes, Challenge Stradale lightweight rims and carbon fiber interior trim. All models get dual-zone climate control, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control.

Before our eagle-eyed readers start firing letters off to our editors, let us be clear that we know the Enzo is the fastest and most powerful sports car ever to emerge from the house that Enzo Ferrari built. That said, if you’re talking “reasonable” price and “high” volume — all relative terms, of course — it would likely be hard to beat the new F599 GTB Fiorano, the long-awaited replacement for the 575M Maranello.

Hard as it might imagine, the new sports coupe might actually qualify as a daily driver, as a factory team set out to demonstrate by driving a pair of F599s all the way from the far end of Brazil all the way to New York City, where they wrapped up the Panamerica 20,000 earlier this month.

The sleek shape of the new coupe sweeps from the low, aggressive nose across a bulging hoodline, and back to its broad, rear fenders. The shape is visually intimidating, and was heavily influenced by the aerodynamic demands of high-speed driving. The flying buttresses help improve downforce, something quite useful when you’re approaching a top speed of “over 205” mph.

Under the Fiorano’s curvaceous hood, in a mid-front configuration, sits a 611-horsepower, 48-valve, 6.0-liter V-12 — a retuned version of the Enzo engine. That V-12 is, by itself, awe-inspiring, but even more impressive is the six-speed electro-hydraulic transmission it’s mated to. There are a growing number of these auto-shifted manuals on the market, but no one seems to have gotten it quite as right as Ferrari has with its Formula 1–inspired gearbox. The F1-Superfast can shift in as little as 100 milliseconds — barely the blink of an eye. That’s significantly faster than with previous Ferraris, and compares with shift times of 50 milliseconds in a Ferrari F1 racer.

The automaker’s numbers suggest the F599 will outperform that other classic Ferrari supercar, the F40, launching from 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds, “making it the fastest production car we’ve built,” notes a Ferrari official. “I know that’s confusing, but we consider the Enzo a ‘limited-production’ car.”

As you’d expect, the Fiorano offers an extensive array of performance and creature comfort options, ranging from customized exterior paint colors to F1-derived ceramic brakes. Expect to shell out at least $260,000 — or more — for a well-equipped one. That is, of course, when you can get your hands on one. The waiting line, according to Ferrari officials, is running at least two years.
